Service Areas:
An ant is a social insect which forms colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organized colonies that may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals. Ants damage millions of dollars of food annually and spread diseases such as salmonella.
Ticks feed on blood and may be vectors of diseases including tularemia, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ticks do not fly or jump; rather they climb onto grasses or branches and attach themselves to a host that walks by. Check yourself, your children and your pets for ticks and promptly remove them. In addition, use a tick or insect repellent, and treat your pets with a collar or topical tick-and-flea treatment.
Although most people consider mice less objectionable than rats, mice are more common and cause significantly more damage. Mice are prolific breeders, producing 6-10 litters continuously throughout the year. The greatest economic loss from mice is not due to how much they eat, but what must be thrown out because of damage or contamination. Food, clothing, furniture, books and many other household items are contaminated by their droppings and urine, or damaged by their gnawing. House mice gnaw through electrical wiring, causing fires and failure of freezers, clothes dryers and other appliances. Mice also can transmit diseases, most notably salmonellosis (bacterial food poisoning) when food is contaminated with infected rodent feces.
Black Widow spiders are found throughout the United States, Mexico, and southern Canada. A female black widow is much more likely to deliver more venom than a male spider. Female black widows are long-legged, shiny, coal-black spiders with an orange, red, or yellow shape on their underside that usually looks like an hourglass but may be another shape. Female black widows are usually about 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) long, but they may be smaller. Black widow spiders are frequently found in low-lying webs in garages, in barbecue grills, around swimming pools, and in wood piles. Most bites occur in rural and suburban areas and occur between the months of April and October. These spiders tend to bite defensively when their webs are disturbed. Bites to babies and children may be much more serious than bites to adults.
Rats, like mice are opportunistic survivors that often live with or near humans. Rats can carry many different zoonotic pathogens such as Leptospira, Toxoplasma Gondii, and campylobacter. The black death is believed to have been carried by the rat flea which prayed on black rats living in Europe during the middle ages.
Fleas may carry Murine typhus and bubonic plague. People living in the western and southwestern United States are at the highest danger of contracting bubonic plague from fleas. In addition, fleas may carry filarial worms or heartworms that infest dogs and tape worms that attack cats, dogs and occasionally humans. Fleas are wingless insects that feed on blood and most commonly infest domestic dogs and cats. To control flea infestation, it is important to treat all animals and their indoor and outdoor environments simultaneously.
Cockroaches are considered by many to be one of the most disgusting of all bugs - and they are definitely dirty, spreading germs and disease wherever they walk, and run. All too often, they are walking across food and food-preparation surfaces to spread contamination while they nibble on crumbs. The German cockroach female protects her offspring by carrying her egg capsule with about 40 eggs inside at the end of her body, until the eggs are ready to hatch. She then drops the capsule for hatching. Each female can produce up to eight egg capsules (about 320 baby cockroaches) in her lifetime. The German cockroach is so prolific, a single egg-carrying female in a home or building can lead to generation of more than 30,000 offspring in a single year. In general, cockroaches can be controlled through a combination of sanitation and traps, baits and/or chemicals. However, because every cockroach species varies, so too will its control. They measure 10 to 16mm in length and their elongated wings are as long as the body and fold laterally when at rest. Wasps are pollinators and may also be considered beneficial because in addition to pollinating they also eat grubs, flies, and other harmful pests.
